Eyes Locked with Lynx

I am sure this Lynx spotted me from a distance long before I spotted her. Lynx are said to be able to spot something as small as a mouse at 250ft (75 meters). The Lynx (Felis lynx) is a medium-sized cat found in mature forests throughout mainland Alaska except on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta and the southern part of the Alaska Peninsula. Their summer fur is tawny in color but with the shortening of daylight in the fall, lynx hormones transform the signal into the growth of new fur which is longer and thicker and grayish in color. Lynx are solitary, silent hunters and are primarily nocturnal. They travel in pairs only during the mating season (March and April). The female’s gestations period is approximately 9 weeks and the litters may produce one to five kittens. With increasing availability of prey (snowshoe hare), females will breed their first year and have larger litters with higher survival rates for the kittens. Lunch Bald Eagle Style

The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States of America. The bald eagle appears on its seal. In the late 20th century it was on the brink of extirpation in the contiguous United States. Populations have since recovered and the species was removed from the U.S. government's list of endangered species on July 12, 1995 and transferred to the list of threatened species. It was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the contiguous states on June 28, 2007. The plumage of an adult bald eagle is evenly dark brown with a white head and tail. The tail is moderately long and slightly wedge-shaped. Males and females are identical in plumage coloration, but sexual dimorphism is evident in the species, in that females are 25% larger than males.[3] The beak, feet and irises are bright yellow. The legs are feather-free, and the toes are short and powerful with large talons. The highly developed talon of the hind toe is used to pierce the vital areas of prey while it is held immobile by the front toes.

Red Squirrel

The red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) makes itself quite conspicuous with its lively habits and noisy chatter. Cone cuttings on stumps or rocks are common and tracks in snow are numerous where this squirrel occurs. It can be found in spruce forests over most of Alaska and has a wide range in North America. The active rodent averages 11 to 13 inches in length (28–33 cm), including tail, and is a rusty-olive color on the upper parts of its body with a whitish belly and underparts. Their distinct reddish color differentiates the red squirrel from other squirrel species and is a good way to identify them.
