Puffins are very social birds. They nest in colonies, where several pairs have nests close together. The puffins interact regularly through many behaviours, including a courtship display called billing. Once paired off, puffins will generally stay with the same mate for life, returning to the burrow they dug together for subsequent mating seasons. After the female lays a single egg, both parents take turn incubating the egg for about 45-55 days. Both the male and female take turns in feeding the chick, small fish and zooplankton.
